Stunning Sedona Engagement Photos at Merry Go Round Rock

When Shannon and David reached out to me to photograph their Sedona engagement photos, they knew they wanted the red rocks in their photos. That epic, colorful landscape is iconic. We headed to Merry Go Round Rock for stunning views and romantic photos. Check out Shannon and David’s story and get tips for planning your Sedona engagement photos!

Even though Shannon and David wanted a rugged, natural aesthetic, they decided to go all out getting ready.Shannon and David showed up for their Sedona engagement photos in perfectly curated outfits. That morning Shannon did her hair and makeup to perfection.

From Sedona, we drove 25 minutes south to Merry Go Round Rock. To be honest, I was a little worried as we drove towards the trail. A storm clearly was rolling towards us. Despite the possibility of rain, Shannon and David were game to keep going. There’s nothing quite as breathtaking as watching a storm roll in over the desert!

Merry Go Round Rock is one of my absolute favorite spots for Sedona engagement photos. The views are amazing, and the trail to get there isn’t too challenging. It’s a 1.4-mile out-and-back trail through the red sands and low plants of the desert. Whatever you do, make sure you bring walking shoes with you.

Shannon, David, and I reached Merry Go Round Rock as the storm pushed towards us. The combination of storm clouds and bright rays of sun resulted in cinematic, moody light. Their photos seriously look like images from a movie. I don’t know if I’ll document a moment exactly like that again. I’m so glad I got to do it with Shannon and David!

These Sedona engagement photos are so amazing because Shannon and David embraced the circumstances. Instead of freaking out about the rain, they rolled with it. They stayed in the moment and let the landscape and unruly weather energize them. We had an amazing time!

Planning Your Sedona Engagement Photos

I love taking engagement photos in Sedona. This quirky city is my home away from home. It doesn’t look like anywhere else in the U.S. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your engagement session in this gorgeous place.

Where to Go

You can take Sedona engagement photos in so many different places. It really depends on the aesthetic and energy you’re going for.

Spots Around Town

  • Tlaquepaque Village
  • Peace Park
  • Sedona Arts Center

Outdoor Locations

  • Merry Go Round Rock
  • Cathedral Rock
  • Lover’s Knoll

When to Do It

Spring is easily the most comfortable time of year for an outdoor engagement session in Sedona. The temperatures mean you can be outside past sunrise without melting. It’s also the busiest time of year in terms of tourism. If you can swing a midweek engagement session, that’s your best bet for solitude at your favorite spots.

If you want a cozy engagement session with winter fashions, consider a winter engagement session. Temperatures still reach around sixty degrees, so you can enjoy everything Sedona has to offer without the spring crowds.

What to Wear

What should you wear for your Sedona engagement photos? That’s up to you! The most important thing is that you’re comfortable. Other than that, I recommend that you coordinate (not match) and layer if possible to make your looks more versatile.

What Else to Consider

Sedona really has so much to offer when it comes to engagement photo locations. Ultimately, you have to decide which location fits you best. Shannon and David are a perfect example of this!

A few things you should consider when planning your engagement session:

  • Are there any entrance or parking fees for your location?
  • What time is your location least crowded?
  • Will the weather change at different points on a trail?
  • Did you pack a water bottle? (Seriously, pack a water bottle.)

learn more about how I do this

With a background in filmmaking, my job is to approach your wedding like I would a film – balancing between the director and a fly-on-the-wall approach. My primary focus is on documenting all of the emotions in the room, that way in the end you get photos that reflect how the day felt, and not just what your shoes looked like.
