Free-Spirited Oregon Engagement Photos in the Woods

Engagement photos are always a blast to photograph. As a wedding photographer, engagement sessions are especially fun for me when I get to document people’s love out in the wild – literally. There’s nothing like an epic landscape to represent the timeless, swept-away feeling of being newly engaged. I was so excited to join M and W in the misty Pacific Northwest to document their Oregon engagement photos.

In this blog post:

Free-Spirited Oregon Engagement Photos

When I met up with M and W, we had typical fall weather for Oregon. It was rainy and chilly with a haze of mist hovering between the trees and around the mountaintops.

Instead of heading right out into the rain, we stopped in a cozy coffee shop in HIllsboro first. Hillsboro is just 25 minutes northwest of downtown Portland, but it feels like another world from the bustle of the city. It’s a great place to take Oregon engagement photos.

At Longbottom Coffee and Tea, M and W sat on the covered deck. The warm woodwork blended beautifully with the landscape around them. M and W got a chance to relax and connect over a tasty drink before we set out for our session.

I liked having this opportunity to document this cozy moment. It’s a different dynamic than the more cinematic photos from later in the session. I got to zoom in on their relationship in a quiet moment similar to one they’d share on a typical weekend.

Epic Landscapes for an Epic Love

Once M and W had the chance to get caffeinated and comfortable in front of the camera, we headed out. I broke out a clear umbrella. If there’s a chance of rain during your photo session, I highly recommend this! Clear umbrellas don’t obscure you from the camera or block what precious natural light that’s available.

Everywhere we turned, Oregon was showing off. The moment I saw the snow-capped mountains, I was planning my next trip to take Oregon engagement photos. What could be more breathtaking than that dreamy mountain in the background? I can just picture the save the dates with all the details listed over the peaks.

There are a million ways to approach engagement photos. I love outdoor sessions because they  give me a chance to tell your story against a romantic backdrop. Your love is big, beautiful, and free-spirited. Landscapes like Oregon’s convey that beautifully.

I love taking engagement photos in dramatic landscapes. Check out these blog posts for more examples:

Your Stunning Engagement Photos

If you’re planning Oregon engagement photos, here are a few things to consider.

1. Where to take Oregon engagement photos

I’m obviously a little biased towards Oregon’s landscape. There are endless parks and forests where you can do outdoor sessions.

If you like the idea of an indoor session, a favorite coffee shop, bar, or bookshop could be a great setting. Just make sure you check with management ahead of your session to make sure it’s OK.

2. What to wear for engagement photos

The most important things are that you’re comfortable and feel good. You’ll want to look back on these photos and feel like you, not like someone else’s Pinterest post.

I like M and W’s approach to this session. M wore a gorgeous pumpkin spice sweater. It had a cool silhouette and movement. The seasonal color popped against the browns and greens of the woods without clashing.

W, on the other hand, wore a black leather jacket and dark wash jeans. The sheen of the leather looked amazing in the low, rainy-day light. It also complemented M’s outfit without being match-y.

3. When to schedule your engagement session

There’s no perfect time to schedule your engagement session. If you want to use your photos for save the dates, give yourself time to get the photos back and order the save the dates. Oregon is beautiful any time of year, but it’s especially cozy in the fall. You have to love the wildflowers and lush greens of spring, too!

learn more about how I do this

With a background in filmmaking, my job is to approach your wedding like I would a film – balancing between the director and a fly-on-the-wall approach. My primary focus is on documenting all of the emotions in the room, that way in the end you get photos that reflect how the day felt, and not just what your shoes looked like.
