5 Unique Engagement Photo Locations in Phoenix

If you think all Phoenix engagement sessions have to be desert and tumbleweeds, think again.

Whether you’re not into the classic Southwest look, trying to avoid the desert heat during hotter months, or just want something that feels different, there’s so much more variety to the area than people might think.

As a filmmaker turned photographer and a lifelong Arizonan, I’ve spent years scouting all kinds of spots. From city streets to design-forward interiors, there’s no shortage of options for any style or vision.

Here are a few of my go-to spots for couples who want something a little different.

1. Wren & Wolf – Phoenix, AZ

If you’re looking for a location with that built-in date night energy, Wren & Wolf is one of my go-to spots.

This popular downtown Phoenix restaurant leans into unique design, with dark wood, statement lighting, and bold details that give your photos that cinematic feel. Between the bar, dining areas, and more private corners, there’s lots to explore. Start with a drink, settle in, and let the night play out.

2. Smiths on 7th – Phoenix, AZ

Smith’s on 7th has that neighborhood hangout vibe, the kind of place that just feels effortlessly cool. It leans casual with that subtle 70s feel, which works well if you want something relaxed with character.

Plus, there’s plenty to do, which keeps the energy up the whole time. You can grab a drink, jump into a game of pool or darts, mess around with board games, or even try karaoke, so it feels more like a hangout than a photoshoot.

3. Downtown Phoenix

Arizona has way more range than people give it credit for, and that includes the city-scape too.

With skyline views, art deco buildings, courthouse steps, rooftops, and everything in between, downtown offers a ton of variety. That means we can explore and create specific environments for your photos that match your personality, pulling from whatever spots speak to your style.

If you’re leaning bold and a little more artsy, we can use murals or street art as your backdrop. If you want something cleaner and more elevated, we can use the modern buildings and architecture to set the scene. Or we keep it simple and just move through the city, walking the streets and letting downtown bring its own energy into the photos.

4. Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia – Scottsdale, AZ

If you’re looking for a European-inspired engagement session without needing to break out your passport, the Omni Scottsdale is a perfect location for you. The design makes it feel like you stepped into a romantic Spanish village, but with the Sonoran Desert as the backdrop.

The intentional details give the space so much character, including patterned tile work, stone archways, and even wooden doors imported from Italy

Plus there’s a wide range of spots and lighting to work with throughout the venue so you get a ton of variety without having to leave the property.  And the views of Camelback Mountain, especially as the sun starts to set? Absolutely unreal.

5. Filthy Animal – Tempe, AZ

For couples leaning toward a bold and fun aesthetic, Filthy Animal in Tempe is a great option.

The art deco–inspired space has a speakeasy feel, with velvet seating, gold accents, patterned wallpaper, and an ornate bar that sets the tone right away.

There’s so much to work with, starting in the front bar area where floor-to-ceiling windows hit the space with incredible, soft light. As you move toward the back, it shifts into a completely different feel with cozy booths and lower lighting. Even the hallways are ornately decorated, so your gallery ends up feeling like a layered story.

Bonus Location: Arcosanti – Mayer, AZ

If you’re interested in a truly one-of-a-kind location and are open to taking a short road trip, Arcosanti is waiting for you about an hour outside of Phoenix.

This experimental urban architecture lab from the 1970s is filled with installations and art pieces you won’t see anywhere else. You can spend an afternoon exploring different corners of the property, moving from sweeping desert views to cozy indoor spaces, and keep going even after the sun goes down.

It’s one of those spaces I can’t wait to get back to and photograph again.

learn more about how I do this

With a background in filmmaking, my job is to approach your wedding like I would a film – balancing between the director and a fly-on-the-wall approach. My primary focus is on documenting all of the emotions in the room, that way in the end you get photos that reflect how the day felt, and not just what your shoes looked like.
